Jeremy was awarded the Center for Advanced Study Fellowship to complete field work in Uganda in the Spring of 2018.

Four students (Valerie, John, Diana, and Amanda) traveled with Jeremy to Ghana to conduct field research and training of local community members for the Soybean Innovation Lab.

David, Kate, and Jeremy conducted research in Uganda as part of Safe Global Water Institute initiatives and CEE 449. Jeremy also spent time in Kenya with collaborators at the University of Nairobi.

Professor Guest and Professor Damien Batstone (University of Queensland, Australia) are the Guest Editors for a Special Issue of Water Research on "Carbon Neutral" wastewater treatment plants. See the call for papers here.

Two stories about newly funded agriculture projects were featured by CEE: (i) USAID funded center on soy in Sub-Saharan Africa and (ii) iSEE-funded project on multifunctional perennial agriculture.

Professor Guest was honored as one of the Teachers Ranked As Excellent by their students for Spring 2014.

Prof. Guest has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the new Royal Society of Chemistry journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology. 

Prof. Guest gave a seminar at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado on opportunities for large-scale renewable energy production from wastewaters.

Ian left for his 2 month research trip to work with our collaborator, Dr. Ameet Pinto, at the University of Glasgow.

Jennifer and Moses completed their Masters degrees - congratulations! Jennifer is off to Northeastern for her post-doc, after which she'll begin her faculty position at Michigan State University. Moses will continue working with Prof. Timm Strathmann and Prof. Guest on his PhD. 

Brian and Ian's article on energy positive wastewater treatment was selected as one of this month's four HOT articles in ES:P&I. Find it freely available here.

Prof. Guest and Prof. Timm Strathmann gave seminars at the University of Glasgow and participated in the workshop "Sustainable and Resilient Water Solutions for Rural Communities", funded by RPSRC and hosted by Univ. of Glasgow.

MARCH 2014
Brian and Ian have a new critical review on the potential for energy positive wastewater treatment by anaerobic and phototrophic technologies. The article (found herewill appear in an Emerging Investigators special issue of Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts.

Valerie (Kenya), Ian (Tanzania), Kate (Uganda), and Prof. Guest led CEE 449 students and conducted research in our partner communities in East Africa. 

Prof. Guest has won a national Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (NSF CAREER) award! The project will run from 2014-2019 and will integrate experimentation, modeling, and quantitative sustainable design to advance microalgal biotechnology for resource positive sanitation. 

Jennifer has officially accepted a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Sociology and the Environmental Science & Public Policy Program at Michigan State University! Congratulations, Jennifer! 

Ian has passed his qualifying exam! Congratulations, Ian! 

Prof. Guest spent 2 weeks in India with Prof. Madhu Viswanathan (UIUC, College of Business) and students from BADM 532 (Sustainable Products for Subsistence). The BADM 532 Sanitation Team (which includes Ian and is funded by the SGWI) is developing a business plan for a sanitation intervention targeting subsistence marketplaces. 

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin announced that UIUC has been awarded a $25 million grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to lead a consortium of universities and NGOs to establish foundations for soybeans in Africa (see video and announcement). The Guest Group will lead the environmental sustainability assessment for the 5-year project.

Jennifer won the 2013 Esmilla Graduate Student Writing Award from the UIUC Environmental Engineering and Science Program - Congratulations Jennifer! 

As part of the Safe Global Water Institute, Valerie and Prof. Guest went to Nairobi, Kenya to meet with collaborators and attend the IWA Development Congress, and Prof. Guest visited potential collaborators in Kampala, Uganda. 

Jennifer gave a podium presentation at the annual 4S (Society for Social Studies Science) in San Diego, CA.

Cheng gave a poster presentation and Ian, Linda, Brian, David, and John attended WEFTEC in Chicago, IL.

Brian and Cheng attended a workshop at Marquette University on Anaerobic Treatment of High Strength Industrial Wastes in Milwaukee, WI.
