Prof. Guest teaches Sustainable Design of Engineering Technologies (CEE 493) during fall semesters and either Water Quality Control Processes II (CEE 538) or Environmental Engineering (CEE 330) during spring semesters. He has also co-developed and co-taught a campus-wide course, Tools for Sustainability (ENVS 301).
CEE 493, SUSTAINABLE DESIGN OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES (FALL SEMESTERS)
The goal for this course is to provide students with an understanding of quantitative sustainable design (QSD) and how to navigate decision-making in the design of civil and environmental engineering infrastructure. Special attention is paid to the interactions among civil and environmental infrastructure with energy systems, water systems, and the environment. Students learn tools for economic (life cycle costing, LCC; technoeconomic analysis, TEA) and environmental (life cycle assessment, LCA) sustainability assessments, and how to link these tools to engineering design decisions under uncertainty. Students design engineered technologies individually and in teams, with special attention to water infrastructure, water quality processes, green chemistry, and bioenergy production. This course is offered to on-campus and online students. Learn more about CEE Online here.
CEE 538, WATER QUALITY CONTROL PROCESSES II (SPRING SEMESTERS)
The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of wastewater treatment, with emphasis on the design and simulation of biological treatment processes. The class builds from fundamental processes (including metabolism, energetics, yield, maintenance, endogenous respiration, gas transfer, etc.) to the design and simulation of full-scale processes (including conventional activated sludge, conventional biological nutrient removal, algal processes, anaerobic digestion, mainline anaerobic processes, struvite production, micropollutant degradation).
